J. Javier Provencio, MD, is the medical director of the Nerancy Neuroscience ICU. He trained in internal medicine, neurology, medical critical care and neurocritical care, all at UVA. His primary clinical focus is the care of patients with acute brain injuries who require critical care. He also has a research focus in inflammation after acute brain injuries, and he serves as one of the champions for diversity in the Department of Neurology.
Dr. Provencio was born in Germany of Spanish parents. After moving to the United States at age 2, he grew up in rural Pennsylvania. He completed his undergraduate education at Swarthmore College and his medical school training at Penn State. He joined UVA in 2015.
Dr. Provencio is married with three kids and one dog. He serves on the Medical Advisory Board for LifeNet, a nonprofit that facilitates organ transplants.
