Dr. Karen Warburton is a nephrologist specializing in kidney and pancreas transplantation, including living donor kidney transplant. In addition to her clinical role, Dr. Warburton is director of Graduate Medical Education Professional Development in the Department of Medicine. She is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
Dr. Warburton grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C., and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, then earned her medical degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Afterward, she went to the University of Pennsylvania, where she completed her residency and chief medical residency, followed by fellowships in nephrology and kidney and pancreas transplantation. She joined the UPenn faculty in 2006.
In 2016, Dr. Warburton returned to UVA as an associate professor in nephrology. In addition to kidney and pancreas transplantation, her clinical interests include immunosuppressive medication, hypertension and chronic kidney disease following solid organ transplantation. Her research interests lie in remediation in medical education.
Outside of work, Dr. Warburton enjoys yoga, cooking, photography, travel and spending time with her husband — who is also a UVA transplant nephrologist — and their three-year-old daughter. The family, including their beloved vizsla, Truman, enjoy hiking and exploring Charlottesville together.
