Khan O. Akmal, MD, specializes in hospice and palliative care. His clinical interests include assisting patients with symptom management and helping them clarify their goals when faced with chronic, life-limiting conditions like cancer. He is committed to taking time to get to know his patients and to be an advocate for them and their families.
Born in New Orleans, La., Dr. Akmal studied chemical engineering at the University of Michigan prior to earning his medical degree at Saba University in Saudi Arabia. He returned to the U.S. for residency training at the University of Texas in Houston, followed by fellowship training in palliative care at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Prior to joining the UVA faculty, Dr. Akmal held a variety of positions, including assistant medical director, inpatient palliative care physician and, most recently, palliative care medical director.
In addition to his clinical and administrative roles, Akmal has spent much of his career teaching both residents and medical students, sharing his knowledge and best practices in hospice and palliative care.
