The son of a career member of the U.S. Army, Dr. Hoard was born in Seattle and grew up moving from one location to another every few years, graduating from high school in London, England. Virginia, with its extensive military facilities. was the place the family was most often stationed so it became home. Dr. Hoard attended American University in Washington, D.C., for undergrad and earned his DDS and MD from the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU). He stayed at MCV for a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and then completed his general surgery training at Emory University.
Dr. Hoard came to UVA in 1986 as the director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division of the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2005, he transitioned to a part-time position at UVA so he could also maintain a private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Hollymead Dental Arts.
Dr. Hoard’s "hobby" and more or less full-time activity outside of his oral surgery practice is maintaining his horse farm in the Keswick area, which includes a business with a full-time trainer boarding and showing horses. His wife and daughter run the horse side of the business and Dr. Hoard keep things going with field, facilities and equipment maintenance: mowing, landscaping and other handyman activities. He has always liked doing things with his hands, so this fits right in.
