Biography

Paul Helgerson, MD, is a hospitalist and section head of Hospital Medicine at UVA, overseeing a team of approximately 30 clinicians caring for patients admitted to the hospital for a variety of reasons, from respiratory problems and infectious issues to kidney failure and more. Helgerson and his team also work in partnership with surgeons and oncologists to manage the medical problems of patients who require specialty care.

In addition to his clinical and leadership duties, Helgerson has a special interest in examining quality of care, specifically: reducing the risk of readmission to the hospital, hospital-acquired infections, or anything than makes hospitalization safer or more effective.

Helgerson is originally from Reston and attended Duke University as an undergraduate. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed his residency at Stanford University, where he was chief resident. Helgerson continued his medical training with a fellowship at University of California San Francisco Medical Center. After 13 years in California, Helgerson arrived at UVA in 2014.

In his free time, Helgerson enjoys running, ice hockey and volunteering at various community organizations with his wife and two teenage children.
