Biography

Peter Heymann, MD, is a professor of pediatrics and the director of pediatric allergy and immunology at UVA. He sees children (from infants to young adults) with allergic disorders including asthma, allergic nose and eye symptoms, food allergies, insect venom allergens, drug hypersensitivity, hives (acute and chronic) and allergic eczema (atopic dermatitis). His division also evaluates and manages children with immune-deficiencies. Dr. Heymann and his team frequently treat children with asthma and food allergies, and they work with other specialists across the health system, including pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, otolaryngologists, and dermatologists, to provide the best care for children with allergic and immunologic disorders.

Dr. Heymann’s research has been focused on children and young adults with allergic asthma and how they respond to the adverse effects of respiratory tract infections. The results have changed how providers treat asthma attacks caused by these infections, which often lead to hospitalization and emergency room visits.

Dr. Heymann has been with UVA since joining the faculty as an assistant professor in 1978. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Washington University in St. Louis for his undergraduate education. He returned to Cleveland for medical school and a residency in pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University. He then moved to Boston, where he completed a fellowship in ambulatory pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Medical Center and earned a master’s in public health from Harvard.

After completing his training in allergy and immunology at UVA, Dr. Heymann was appointed head of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Medicine in 1988. He lives in Charlottesville with his wife, and his daughter lives close by in North Carolina.
