Bio & Overview

An ophthalmologist and leader in corneal transplants, Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD, serves as chair of the UVA Health Department of Ophthalmology.

He specializes in treating corneal disorders and corneal procedures, including:

  • Fuchs dystrophy
  • Keratoconus
  • Endothelial keratoplasty
  • Cataract surgery

His research interests include corneal dystrophy, keratoconus, corneal transplant, surgical devices and techniques, and genetic analysis of corneal disease.

“I seek to understand how a person’s conditions impact their daily life and I work toward restoring their ability to perform meaningful activities,” he says. “I also seek to educate patients about their conditions and any treatments being considered.”

Dr. Jun grew up in Athens, GA, a college town similar to Charlottesville, where he enjoyed camping, sports, and learning. He was fascinated by the wonders of biology and the human body and wanted to use his knowledge to help others. He earned his medical degree and PhD in genetics and molecular biology from Emory University in Atlanta.

He completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University. After his residency, Dr. Jun completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, a fellowship in corneal gene therapy at the Imperial College London, and clinician–scientist fellowship at Johns Hopkins.

Dr Jun exceeded my expectations. I knew that my vision was only 20/200 since the secondary cataract developed. I asked if I didn't see improvement the day of the procedure would it get better. He said by tomorrow. While checking out and setting up my follow up appt I could clearly read my phone calendar! I'm so grateful to Dr Jun for fixing the vision in both of my eyes. I had Fuchs Corneal Dystrophy and cataracts in both eyes before he fixed both of my eyes.
