Bio & Overview

Patrick O. McGarey Jr., MD, is an otolaryngologist at the UVA Center for Voice and Swallowing. He specializes in the medical and surgical care of patients with voice, airway, and swallowing problems, diagnosing and treating these conditions using a wide variety of in-clinic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. He also performs surgery using conventional and technologically advanced (laser) techniques.

At the Center for Voice and Swallowing, patients are cared for by an interdisciplinary team of physicians and speech language pathologists. Patients range from singers and professional speakers with a variety of voice problems to those with laryngeal cancer. The team also treats patients who develop scar tissue in their airway (laryngotracheal stenosis) and patients with globus sensation, throat clearing, and other swallowing-related problems.

Dr. McGarey is interested in clinically impactful research that affects patient care. He’s working to create multi-institutional research partnerships to study the relatively rare laryngeal disease he treats.

Born in Washington DC, Dr. McGarey grew up in a nearby suburb of McLean, Virginia. He attended the College of William and Mary, where he studied biology and economics. He pursued his medical degree and completed post-graduate residency training at the University of Virginia. Dr. McGarey then completed a fellowship in laryngology and voice disorders at the University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas, prior to returning to UVA as an attending physician.

In his free time, Dr. McGarey enjoys traveling with his wife and daughters, fly fishing, and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

For such a young doctor, Dr. McGarey has been a godsend. Where I can sometimes be pessimistic about my issues, he has never made me feel like I'm right in being that way! He's given me hope and listens to how I hope things go and honestly I would not anyone else do the surgeries I've had to have or the one I will have in the future. I researched him after my first consult and he has a very impressive effect on google! And he's so humble, I'm blessed to have been referred to UVA so honestly, please stay consistent! As I told him, his eye for detail prob saved my life and his skill in taking the necessary steps to restore my voice did save my life. I really hope he knows how much of a difference he truly makes.

I have received the upmost care by him and he never fails to give it his all and do better than right by me. He has a balance of professionalism but also a heart that's close to his patients and their needs. I am one of them. He has been there in the bad and seen me in the good. God has used him MIGHTILY in my life. We are BEYOND BLESSED to know him and we are VERY THANKFUL TO GOD that he has come Into our lives and been used by God. He has an out of this world bedside manner and way of talking to you that you not only feel seen but heard. He is MORE THAN an asset to UVA and should be seen as such.
