Bio & Overview

Adanna Akujuo, MD, is a heart surgeon who specializes in advanced techniques for heart repair, including minimally invasive and transcatheter procedures. Her areas of expertise include:

  • Complex mitral valve repair
  • Minimally invasive valve surgery
  • Transcatheter treatment for valve disease
  • Atrial fibrillation surgery
  • Heart bypass surgery
  • Aortic surgery

“I understand that learning you have heart disease that requires intervention can be scary,” she says. “I believe in approaching patients with compassion. I want them to know that I will be dedicated to their care and well-being. My approach is the same that I would hope for any family member of mine.”

Dr. Akujuo was born in New York, and her family returned to Nigeria when she was 11 months old. She returned to the U.S. after high school.

Growing up in Nigeria, Dr. Akujuo admired a neighbor who was a doctor. That neighbor and a PBS documentary on heart transplants inspired her to become a heart surgeon.

Dr. Akujuo earned her undergraduate degree from York College City University of New York and attended medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia.

She completed her residency and internship in general surgery at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in New York. She also completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where she was a senior mitral fellow.

She is the vice chair of community engagement and wellness at UVA Health and a global surgeon with the Vincent Obioma Ohaju Memorial Foundation, which provides healthcare and medical missions in Nigeria.

The PA explained my condition better than any other physician I have seen since this issue started. She really eased my mind. She is awesome and I hope you never lose her.

Both providers were attentive & provided great explanations. Discussed my treatment plan. Ensured I was comfortable with the tx plan & that my anxiety was decreased due to their education/explanation.
