Bio & Overview
As an acute care pediatrics nurse practitioner, Andrea Jones, RN, MSN, CCRN, AC-PNP, is part of the team that cares for children who need an abdominal organ transplant. For each of her patients, she likes “to approach them with a welcoming smile. I see all of my patients with an open mind and am relaxed in my demeanor to help make them more comfortable.” Before she begins to examine her patients, she always likes to catch up on their lives and check in to help them know that she cares about more than their medical care. She shares, “I love to hear about my patients’ lives and what interests them or things that may be troubling. I'm invested in their overall well-being and happy to listen or help wherever I can or find resources to help them.”
Andrea began her career at UVA Health Children's in 2016 as a bedside nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). While in the PICU, she had various roles in addition to her patient care work (orienting new nurses to the unit, assisting with skills day, chair of employee engagement committee, and serving as clinical faculty for the UVA School of Nursing). She graduated in 2020 with her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as an acute care pediatrics nurse practitioner and transitioned into her NP role with the pediatric abdominal transplant team. “When I started my nursing career,” she shares, “I had always planned on going to nurse practitioner school. I wanted to become a nurse practitioner because I wanted to be able to have longer-term relationships with my patients and be able to be with them through their journey. I've always wanted to develop relationships with my patients and help them live their best life.”
Andrea was born in Rochester, New York, and moved to Apex, North Carolina, as a young child and grew up there. She attended Catawba College for her undergraduate degree on an athletic scholarship for soccer. Once she graduated, she worked toward prerequisites for nursing school and moved to Charlottesville in 2014 to attend UVA School of Nursing. She met her husband while attending UVA.
Her husband, a mechanical engineer, is also a graduate of UVA. Outside of work, Andrea loves to exercise/teach group fitness classes and play co-ed soccer. She also loves to spend a lot of time with her family and friends.

Highlights
Meet Transplant Nurse Practitioner Andrea Jones, AC-PNP
My name is Andrea Jones, and I am a pediatric acute care nurse practitioner here at UVA. I work with the pediatric abdominal transplant team, which consists of kidney and liver transplant. We evaluate children who are either born with illnesses that need a liver or kidney transplant or a circumstance that comes up that makes them a candidate. So we follow them pre-transplant, work them up. Follow them through the transplant process, and then continue care with them post-transplant. I've spent the beginning part of my nursing career in the pediatric ICU here at UVA. And I would say every day working at the bedside has helped me become the nurse and nurse practitioner that I am today. Something about my job that gives me such great satisfaction is being able to see a patient, particularly a child who has struggled with a disease process or illness, and we're able to transform a part of their life that gives them hope and a stronger future. And then being able to see them come back to clinic and they're running around and making great strides, and just growing like they should be doing.
