Andrew S Chang, MD
Family Medicine
Bio & Overview
Andrew Chang, MD, is a family medicine attending physician who cares for patients at UVA Primary Care Riverside. He has a special interest in the management of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as acute illnesses. “I enjoy it when I can help patients better understand their medical conditions so they can make the best-informed decisions about their health,” he says.
It was Dr. Chang’s early exposure to physicians with that same patient-centered approach to care that made him consider becoming a doctor himself. “I started thinking about wanting to be a physician when my mother had a diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease while I was in college,” he says. “I saw how empathy from different healthcare providers affected my mother positively.”
Dr. Chang was born and raised in South Korea. His family moved to Maryland when he was 16 years old. He stayed in Maryland for college, attending the University of Maryland in College Park prior to obtaining his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Dr. Chang then completed his residency at West Virginia University Rural Family Medicine in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
In his free time, Dr. Chang enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, playing tennis, cooking, learning guitar and visiting local wineries in Charlottesville.
