Bio & Overview
Ankush Gosain, MD, PhD, MBA, FACS, FAAP is a pediatric surgeon-scientist. He specializes in treating children who are experiencing cancer, Hirschsprung disease, or trauma caused by injury or illness. He also specializes in pediatric colorectal surgery, liver tumors, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and pediatric trauma.
He is the chief of the division of pediatric surgery and the surgeon-in-chief for UVA Health Children’s.
Dr. Gosain completed his undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University. He earned his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He also earned a PhD in cell biology, neurobiology, and anatomy from Loyola University Chicago. After earning his doctorate, he completed his residency at Loyola University Medical Center and a fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Dr. Gosain is an NIH-funded scientist whose research informs his surgical work. He leads a science laboratory that studies the development and function of the enteric nervous system — a part of the nervous system that controls many digestive functions — and the gastrointestinal immune system. The goal of his research is the development of new therapies for congenital gastrointestinal diseases, like Hirschsprung disease, and other gut-related conditions.
Gosain was drawn to pediatric surgery because of the opportunity to make discoveries that would be immediately impactful to the lives of children and families. “I am convinced that we can meaningfully impact diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes,” he says.
He also shares that his parents, who emigrated to the U.S. from India, inspired him to pursue medicine. “Our parents instilled in us a desire to discover new knowledge and a sense of responsibility to honor their sacrifices and improve not just our lives, but those of society more broadly.”
