Highlights
Dr. Anneke Schroen video profile
My name is Anneke Schroen, and I'm a breast surgeon at the University of Virginia. So I specialize in the oncologic aspect of breast surgery. Therefore, what I do is a whole range of breast operations from lumpectomies to mastectomies, and axillary surgeries. Most of our patients, of course, are women with breast cancer, but we do see men with breast cancer as well. I think it's important for patients to know that we are here to support them, and we can offer them many different treatment options, but also a lot of support staff as well. They do not need to feel like they are going through this alone. I really love what I do. I enjoy getting to take care of patients for many years. Fortunately, the cure rates with breast cancer are high, so many of my patients, I get to know for years and years, which is a true delight. A second reason that I enjoy what I do is that I get the privilege of working with highly specialized and highly integrated professionals. We have an entire team of specialists working for each and every patient to put together an individualized treatment plan. Lastly, I like the fact that in breast cancer treatment and diagnosis, there are so many new advances. Each of these changes is working towards improving patient outcome; both in terms of survival and also in terms of quality of life.
