Bio & Overview
Behzad Farivar, MD, is a vascular and endovascular surgeon and the co-director of a new UVA Aortic Center. He cares for patients with a variety of circulatory conditions, including aortic aneurysms and dissections, carotid disease and peripheral arterial disease. Dr. Farivar has extensive experience in the treatment of complex aortic disease, with a special focus on the use of fenestrated and branched endograft technology. Prior to joining UVA in 2020, Dr. Farivar was assistant professor of surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. While there, he served as the principle investigator on the largest physician-sponsored investigational device exemption trial for endovascular repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms in high-risk patients with fenestrated and branched endografts. He is the first surgeon in the U.S. to perform an endovascular aortic aneurysm repair using novel endovascular 3D navigation technology to minimize ionizing radiation during the procedure.
In addition to his clinical pursuits, Dr. Farivar served as the associate program director for the vascular surgery integrated-residency training program at Cleveland Clinic. At UVA, he will continue his efforts to educate future clinicians as the associate program director for the vascular surgery fellowship training program in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
Dr. Farivar received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. He then pursued a vascular surgery fellowship at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by a complex endovascular aortic surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Highlights
Meet Vascular Endovascular Surgeon Behzad Farivar, MD
My name is Behzad Farivar. I'm a vascular endovascular surgeon at the University of Virginia. I also serve as the co-director of the UVA Aortic Center. I specialize in a variety of circulatory conditions. Specifically, I treat carotid conditions, abdominal or thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms or dissections, and also patients with peripheral arterial disease. I truly believe in a patient-centered care approach. We sit down during our initial consultation, review your medical records, and address any of your concerns that are currently on your mind. We want to be able to have joint decision-making, and I want you to be able to understand what treatment options are available and what are the risks and benefits of each procedure. And once we are able to get them through a procedure or an operation safely, once they fully recover and they are able to spend that time with their family members, and they see you in the office and tell you about their experience and how lucky and fortunate they feel that we have been able to safely get them through that procedure, that provides the most joy for me.
