Bio & Overview
Brian Halstater, MD, is a family medicine physician who cares for patients of all ages, treating acute illnesses and conditions, managing chronic disease, and promoting prevention and wellness.
A regular contributor to professional journals and frequent presenter at medical conferences, Dr. Halstater’s research interests include population health management and improving patient care through systems-based improvements.
“I believe that patients are people first and are not defined by whatever disease they have,” he says.
“I feel deeply honored and privileged to be involved in their care and their lives.”
Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Halstater received his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J., before heading to the West Coast for residency training at the University of California Los Angeles. There, he was chief resident and later a faculty member, working as lead physician at a co-managed family medicine clinic, as well as co-residency program director.
Dr. Halstater returned to the East Coast to take on a variety of roles at Duke University from 2004 to 2023, including residency director of the Family Medicine Program, and medical director of Duke Student Health, Duke Family Medicine and the COVID Testing and Vaccine Center.
He joined the faculty at UVA Health in August 2023. “I believe in working with patients where they are,” says Dr. Halstater. “Each of us has different experiences and perspectives, and my role in assisting patients is to help them make the decisions that are right for them.”
