Bio & Overview
Bruce Cohen, MD, is an associate professor of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences. He directs the UVA Forensic Psychiatry Residency Training Program, as well as the UVA Electroconvulsive Therapy Service. He also provides the psychiatric component in the “Mind, Brain, and Behavior” course taken by all UVA first year medical students.
Dr. Cohen has received multiple awards from the School of Medicine, including the Basic Science Teaching Award and the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Cohen received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from The Johns Hopkins University, where he also completed his psychiatry residency training. He came to UVA in 1993 for a forensic psychiatry fellowship and joined the full-time faculty after completion.
In addition to being the primary provider of electroconvulsive therapy in the central Virginia area, Dr. Cohen lectures throughout the region on forensic psychiatric assessment and mental health law. He also is the author of Theory and Practice of Psychiatry (Oxford University Press), a single-authored textbook used in medical schools and psychiatric residency programs throughout the United States. The textbook provides a conversational yet detailed discussion of conceptual issues, research and treatment in psychiatric and general medical practice.
