Caitlin Barnes, MS, is a board-certified genetic counselor who joined the UVA genetics division in 2015. She sees a broad range of pediatric, metabolic, and adult patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Barnes is part of the multi-disciplinary comprehensive care team for the UVA Hemophilia center. 

Barnes loves helping individuals and families navigate genetic testing results and understand how genetic variation affects their health. Barnes especially enjoys seeing individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. In addition to her clinical work, Barnes is the education coordinator for the Division of Genetics, organizing and directing the educational programs and trainee experiences for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students in medicine, genetic counseling, and laboratory programs.

Originally from a small-town, New Philadelphia, Ohio, Barnes attended Miami University (of Ohio), where she earned her bachelor’s degree in zoology with a minor in molecular biology. Barnes received her master’s degree in genetic counseling from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. During her graduate training, she completed clinical internships at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Duke University, Wake Forest University, and Oregon Health & Science University.

Barnes lives in Charlottesville with her husband, Tom, who is also a Charlottesville transplant. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, gardening, spending time with friends and family, and planning her next travels.
