Bio & Overview

Cesarina Thohan, MD, is a vascular neurologist who provides stroke care and prevention, including treating ischemic stroke and mini stroke. Her research focuses on health disparities and social determinants on stroke outcomes in Hispanic and minority populations.

“I prioritize clear communication and aim to empower patients to take an active role in their care,” she says. “My ultimate goal is to deliver holistic care that not only treats the medical condition, but also supports the patient’s overall well-being within the context of their cultural and social environment.”

Thohan was born in the Dominican Republic and migrated with her family to Connecticut when she was 16. These experiences gave her a deep understanding of the challenges faced by diverse and underserved communities.

She studied Spanish communication and literature at the University of Connecticut and earned her medical degree from West Virginia University. She completed her neurology residency at the University of North Carolina and her vascular neurology fellowship at the University of Virginia.

Thohan is the recipient of the prestigious NIH SCANR (Stroke National Capital Area Network for Research) StrokeNet Fellowship, reflecting her commitment to advancing stroke care and research.
