Bio & Overview
As a cardiologist, Chad A. Hoyt, MD, specializes in managing care for patients with heart disease. He has a special interest in advanced cardiovascular imaging.
An expert in physician leadership, teaching, and growing new programs, Dr. Hoyt serves as executive director for clinical growth and outreach at UVA Health. In this role, he will cultivate opportunities to expand the UVA Health network throughout Virginia.
Growing up in a large family in Maryland, Dr. Hoyt paid for his education by working in sales during his last two years of high school and throughout college. Though challenging at times to juggle so many responsibilities, the job helped him learn to connect with others and taught him about “adversity, commitment, and being a team player.” Realizing that he loved working with people and building relationships, the experience prepared him for a career in medicine.
“I love the combination of developing personal relationships with patients, problem-solving, and the changing nature of the medical field,” Dr. Hoyt says. “The variety that a career in cardiology provides is very fulfilling. I believe in servant leadership, so patient care is a great way for me to exemplify that.”
A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Hoyt completed an internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University and a cardiology fellowship at Emory University. He also completed a cardiovascular MRI fellowship at The National Heart and Lung Institute in London, England.
Prior to joining UVA Health, Dr. Hoyt served for a decade as the executive chair for the Centra Heart and Vascular Institute, one of the largest cardiovascular centers in Virginia.
Passionate about medical missions, Dr. Hoyt founded Healing Hearts Vietnam, a non-profit focused on training cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in Vietnam. The organization, which also provides support for impoverished children and adults in Vietnam, has paid for life-saving heart procedures and surgeries for more than 500 children and adults.
For Dr. Hoyt, providing the best care possible means treating patients like family. “My patients become my friends,” Dr. Hoyt says. “I make every effort to get to know many of their personal details, and take the time needed to chat with them. I try to focus on more than just their physical needs.”

Highlights
Meet Chad Hoyt, MD
My name is Chad Hoyt. I'm a clinical cardiologist here at UVA Health, and I'm also the Executive Director of Clinical Growth and Outreach. So I'm an imaging cardiologist. I see general cardiology patients, and I also am involved in advanced cardiovascular imaging. Well, I've been asked why I decided to go into medicine many times, and what I would say is that I spent a lot of time in the hospital due to a childhood illness. I received amazing care in the hospital. And it really inspired me to do the same and pay it forward. I'm passionate about a couple of things. First of all, physician leadership. I really enjoy mentoring younger physicians to help them reach their highest potential, help them serve the community better. And secondly, I have a passion for medical missions. For 20 years, I've been traveling to Vietnam. I co-founded a nonprofit called Healing Hearts Vietnam. And we provide financial support for poor Vietnamese children to have open heart surgery. We also provide educational support for the physicians. We do ultrasound screening clinics. So I'm very proud of that work and I have a real passion for that. I like to laugh. I like to make you and your family feel at ease. I like to include you in decisions. And I like to get to know you personally and know all the details that are going on in your life. And I think that engenders trust. And most of the patients that know me for the last 24 years would say that I'm their friend first and their physician second. So I take a lot of pride and joy in that. I recognize you and I know your name when I see you in public. Many of you will have my cell phone and my email, and that's just the way I like to do it. So I think UVA Health is a very unique place because we have a world-class academic center with all of the benefits, but with a small town community feel.
