Bio & Overview
Charles Alex, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed a residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in respiratory and critical care medicine. Following his postgraduate training, Dr. Alex served as a staff physician at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center in Hines, Illinois, and an attending physician at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. His early research focused on disorders of hypoventilation and treatment with diaphragm pacing. D. Alex mentored doctoral candidates studying exercise physiology and rehabilitation of patients with COPD. This research included work on mechanical ventilation and clinical trials involving lung transplant patients. He has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters and is a recipient of many teaching awards. Dr. Alex was selected to be the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at Loyola University, one of the Midwest's larger programs. He earned the title of professor in 2001 and eventually became the Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Alex joined the staff at the University of Virginia in 2020, focusing on lung transplant patients' care.
