Bio & Overview

Daphne H. Knicely, MD, MEHP, specializes in caring for patients with a wide range of kidney conditions — including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, electrolyte disorders and kidney stones. Her clinical focus is acute and chronic dialysis in all forms (but with a particular interest in home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), diabetic kidney disease and solitary kidneys. She has a special interest in patient education and improving outcomes through patient education and increasing involvement in their healthcare.

She is medical director of UVA Dialysis Staunton, where she follows patients who are on in-center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, or peritoneal dialysis.

Dr. Knicely was raised in Greenville, North Carolina. She attended East Carolina University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics, BA in Mathematics, and minor in biology. She stayed at East Carolina University to attend its Brody School of Medicine and complete her internal medicine residency. Following her residency in 2011, she was invited to be chief resident.

After completing her nephrology fellowship training at UVA in 2014, she took a faculty position at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine within the Division of Nephrology. As a faculty member, she was given the opportunity to complete a Master of Education in the Health Professions (MEHP) at Johns Hopkins University School of Education. During her time at Johns Hopkins, she was

  • Co-director for the Johns Hopkins Nephrology Patient Education Program
  • Co-director for the second-year medical student Genes-to-Society–Renal course
  • Teaching faculty for the Osler Medicine training program
  • Director of quality improvement and patient safety for nephrology fellows
  • Associate director of the Nephrology Fellowship program

Dr. Knicely returned to UVA in 2020 to be closer to family. While at UVA for her fellowship training, she met her husband, who is a critical care nurse. They have two daughters. She loves to garden and spend time with her family.
