Bio & Overview
David Cassada, MD, is a vascular surgeon who brings a strong problem-solving approach to patient care. His interests include mentorship, physician wellness, and research.
He was born and raised in southwest Virginia and attended Washington and Lee University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed his general surgical training at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. He completed his vascular surgery fellowship at UVA Health.
In 2001, Cassada received the Founder’s Award from the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery for research into the protection of the spinal cord from ischemia-reperfusion. That same year, he also received the Raymond H. Alexander MD Award from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma for research into the preservation of spinal cord function after trauma.
He was previously a member of the National Consortium for Treatment of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, where he worked with a mentor to establish common terminology and practice for patients with the condition. He also serviced as president of the Virginia Vascular Society from 2019–2021, where he facilitated state-wide decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is the co-author of numerous publications, presentations, and book chapters.
In his free time, Cassada enjoys outdoor activities, music, and spending time with his wife and daughters.
