Bio & Overview
David Hryvniak, DO, specializes in sports medicine, running medicine, regenerative medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He sees a wide variety of patients, including high-level athletes, weekend warriors, active kids and adults just starting a fitness program. He has a special interest in the endurance athlete, especially runners, seeing these patients at the UVA Runner’s Clinic.
Dr. Hryvniak is an expert in musculoskeletal ultrasound, providing both diagnostic exams and ultrasound-guided injections. He is also an expert in regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal injury, with extensive experience providing prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma injections. He is an active researcher and has published multiple peer-reviewed chapters and studies on running medicine.
Dr. Hryvniak attended the College of William and Mary, where he earned his bachelor’s in kinesiology and ran Division I track and cross country for the Tribe. He received his medical degree from the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg. He came to UVA in 2011 for a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, followed by a fellowship in primary care sports medicine. He joined the faculty in 2016 as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Hryvniak is a team physician for the UVA Cavaliers and JMU Dukes, providing care for these Division I athletes. He is also the team physician for Fluvanna High School. He provides volunteer medical coverage for numerous community sporting events, including the Charlottesville Marathon and Half Marathon, the Women’s Four Miler and the Charlottesville Ten Miler. ?
Outside of work, Dr. Hryvniak is an avid runner who runs for the Ragged Mountain Olympic Development Racing Team, with a personal best of 2:27 in the marathon. He enjoys hiking with his family, playing golf and exploring Charlottesville.
