David Hryvniak, DO, specializes in sports medicine, running medicine, regenerative medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He sees a wide variety of patients, including high-level athletes, weekend warriors, active kids and adults just starting a fitness program. He has a special interest in the endurance athlete, especially runners and cyclists, seeing these patients at the UVA Runner’s Clinic.

Dr. Hryvniak is an expert in musculoskeletal ultrasound, holding a Registered in Musculoskeletal (RMSK) sonography certification. With this expertise he provides both diagnostic exams and ultrasound-guided injections that are unique to the athletic population.

He is also an expert in regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal injury, with extensive experience providing platelet-rich plasma injections for a variety of conditions. He also is an expert in performing TENJET procedures for the chronic tendinopathy in the athletic active population.

He is an active researcher and has published multiple peer-reviewed chapters and studies in sports medicine and running medicine. He is active collaborator with the UVA Department of Kinesiology.

Dr. Hryvniak attended the College of William and Mary, where he earned his bachelor’s in kinesiology and ran Division I track and cross country for the Tribe. He received his medical degree from the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg. He came to UVA in 2011 for a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, followed by a fellowship in primary care sports medicine. He joined the UVA faculty in 2016 in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Hryvniak is a team physician for the UVA Cavaliers, providing care for these elite Division I athletes. He provides volunteer medical coverage for numerous community sporting events, including the Charlottesville Marathon and Half Marathon, the Women’s Four Miler and the Charlottesville Ten Miler.

Outside of work, Dr. Hryvniak is an avid runner and cyclist who runs for the Ragged Mountain Olympic Development Racing Team, with a personal best of 2:27 in the marathon. He enjoys hiking with his family, playing golf and exploring Charlottesville.

The doctor explained the procedure before it started and what the purpose was. Also asked if I had any questions. He also described that I'd feel a bit of pinching and burning with the initial numbing shot but then feel pressure from the saline shots. He also kept talking to me about college and stuff during the procedure which also helped distract me. And explained what to expect after the procedure and asked again if I had any questions.
