Bio & Overview

Diane Burns, FNP, collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to care for patients facing kidney disease. As a nurse practitioner, she focuses on preventative care to slow the progression of disease, and she makes sure her patients are educated so they can make informed decisions about their care. She describes her approach to care as “holistic, compassionate and patient-centered.”

Diane grew up in the Shenandoah Valley and completed nursing school in the late 1990s while working as a patient care technician in a hospital cardiac unit. While learning the basic skills of nursing, she also learned that “the smallest things can make the biggest difference in the patient experience.” After 14 years in home care, she obtained a position at a UVA outpatient clinic to care for nephrology patients. Her interest in nephrology stems from caring for a family member with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) while dealing with the many complications of end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Her journey to become a nurse practitioner comes from wanting to do more and always wanting to learn. After working during school with nephrology patients, she decided to return to provide care for this special population.
