Bio & Overview
Elizabeth Gaughan, MD, is a medical oncologist, specializing in melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
A native of Northern Virginia, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame. She completed her medical education with honors at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Gaughan completed her post-graduate training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School. She joined the University of Virginia medical faculty in 2012.
Dr. Gaughan is a clinical investigator with a special interest in management of melanoma, cancer immunotherapy and toxicity of checkpoint inhibitor therapy. She leads the University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center Melanoma Translational Research Team, charged with studying ways to reduce the burden of melanoma in the Commonwealth.
She has served as UVA Principal Investigator on multiple trials and collaborates with colleagues both across the Health System, and nationally, on research projects. Dr. Gaughan also enjoys working with medical students, residents and fellows.
In her spare time, Dr. Gaughan enjoys spending time at the beach, volunteering in the Charlottesville community, interior decorating, and participating in outdoor activities.
