Bio & Overview

Emily Ayers, MD, is an oncologist who specializes in caring for blood cancers, including lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). She is also an active researcher and is particularly interested in finding novel treatments for patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma that has been resistant to treatment.

Originally from Naples, Florida, Ayers left Florida for New York City at the age of 18 to attend Columbia University. She decided to stay at Columbia for medical school and then moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to complete her residency and fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ayers met her husband, UVA cardiologist Michael Ayers, MD, in medical school. The couple married prior to graduation and had two children during their fellowship training. Both found UVA to be a good fit for their clinical aspirations and have enjoyed spending their free time with their two boys and two dogs exploring Charlottesville.

It was discouraging to hear we needed the same procedure type to collect tissue and left confused and frustrated by the setback. Seems we could have been told a couple weeks earlier and had the procedure scheduled and done. We were shocked to hear that the previous EBus pathology collected was insufficient to accurately type the blood cancer. We're over three months since finding the lesion / mass. 1 step forward, three steps back.

I was seen for a pet scan, blood work and by my oncologist. I am a burn survivor. Not one of your wonderful medical professionals asked me prying question about my painful accident and resulting disfigurement, thereby forcing me to relive a painful past. This was a first for me in the medical world!! Kudos to the staff of UVA. I love you!!
