Bio & Overview
Fellowship trained in allergy/clinical immunology, Emily C. McGowan, MD, PhD, specializes in caring for patients with eosinophilic conditions, including eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), other eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs), and hypereosinophilic syndrome. She also sees patients with food allergies, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and urticarial/angioedema.
She completed her undergraduate education at Duke University and then pursued research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She completed her medical training at the University of Virginia, her internship/residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and fellowship training in allergy/clinical immunology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.
She also completed a PhD in clinical investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. McGowan returned to UVA in 2016.
Dr. McGowan’s research interest focuses on understanding the epidemiology and treatment options for eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease. She has received funding through:
