Hematology Oncology

Bio & Overview

Fabian Bolte, MD, is a medical oncologist and clinical researcher. He specializes in treating gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal, pancreatic, stomach, esophageal, liver, gallbladder, bile duct, and anal cancers.

“A cancer diagnosis can bring difficult questions and important decisions,” Dr. Bolte says. “I strive to provide compassionate and personalized care, taking time to understand each patient's individual circumstances, goals, and needs.”

Dr. Bolte was born and raised in Arnsberg, a small town in northwestern Germany and received his medical degree from the University of Münster. He joined the National Institutes of Health for a research fellowship studying immune responses and liver inflammation in chronic viral hepatitis.

He began his internal medicine residency at University Medical Center in Münster before coming to the University of Virginia, where he completed his residency and a fellowship in hematology and oncology.

“I believe that each patient brings individual priorities, needs, and goals to their treatment,” he says, “and I work closely with patients, their families and a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists to develop a care plan that reflects what matters most to them.”

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, trail running, and cooking. His wife, Ashley, is a pulmonary and critical care physician at UVA Health.
