Bio & Overview
George Politis, MD, is an associate professor of anesthesiology and pediatrics with a special interest in global health. He serves as the co-director of the UVA Outpatient Surgical Center.
Dr. Politis attended Stanford University for his undergraduate education and earned his medical degree from Cornell. While in medical school, he traveled to Quito, Ecuador, for a pediatric sub-internship at Baca Ortiz Children’s Hospital. After graduation, he completed his pediatrics residency at the Oakland Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California and then earned a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from the University of California Berkeley. He then came to UVA for a residency in anesthesiology, and completed a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In 1995, he returned to UVA and joined the faculty as an assistant professor.
Since 1997, Dr. Politis has participated in regular medical missions with Operation Smile, providing anesthesia and perioperative care to children and training anesthesia providers in less developed and low-resource nations. He is a member of Operation Smile’s Quality Improvement Committee and has chaired its Anesthesia Council since 2000.
