Bio & Overview
As a nephrologist, Hasan Iftikhar, MD, specializes in caring for patients with kidney disease. His clinical expertise includes:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- End stage renal disease
- Glomerulonephritis
- Acute kidney injury
- Home dialysis therapy
When caring for patients, Dr. Iftikhar takes a holistic approach. He looks at his patient's medical condition from all angles. He explains, “While kidney disease can rapidly afflict those with an inherited disorder, it can also advance in the setting of poor metabolic health, diet, and tobacco smoking. Delving into each of these challenges and trying to minimize their contributions can improve the outlook for someone’s kidney health.”
Dr. Iftikhar received his early education in Karachi, Pakistan. He shares, “I was raised in a home where education was highly prized. I was drawn to the sciences at an early age. I also like to please people. My mother introduced me to the idea that practicing medicine can be the way to both follow my knack for basic science as well as work with people.”
Dr. Iftikhar earned his medical degree from Dow Medical College. He completed internal medicine residency training at Howard University Hospital and his nephrology fellowship training at George Washington University Hospital, both in Washington D.C.
“Each institution has left a mark in my professional and personal outlook and I cherish them all.”
Since completing his medical training, he has worked with patients across southern and central Virginia. “I really love the culture of Southern hospitality in south and central Virginia, as well as the dynamism of its north.”

Highlights
Meet Hasan Iftikhar, MD
My name is Hasan Iftikhar and I am a nephrologist at UVA Health. Within my field of nephrology, I've developed a particular interest in home dialysis modalities to remove barriers for our patients to be able to do it successfully and to feel confident in their abilities. So new patients can expect a lot of questions from me. We go over your medical diagnoses in detail, or we go over the management of your overall chronic medical conditions, and after that, we talk about your kidney disease in particular. And I hope that by the end of it, we are able to arrive at a plan and at a conclusion as to how we will go forward from there. As a nephrologist, I'm keenly involved in the care of my patients, that includes a large number of patients who are on dialysis as well as patients who have kidney disease. And being able to touch upon so many lives, that is what I love most about my job.
