Heather A Thornsvard-Carpenter, PT

Heather Carpenter has been a physical therapist in the outpatient rehabilitation department for 21 years, and has been the clinical manager for the department for 17 of those.

Her clinical focus is caring for patients with amputations, orthopedic issues, complications from cancer, and high-level balance issues.

She trains aspiring physical therapists and speaks regularly on best practices for amputee care and rehabilitation.

Heather is also certified in dry needling and athletic training. “I am an avid exerciser, and I put as much work into my own health as the effort my patients are required to put into theirs,” she says.

“I like to approach clients as partners in care. Their participation is integral to the success of physical therapy services.”

Growing up in a military family, Heather has lived across the U.S. and in multiple countries. She received her undergraduate degree from UVA, where she first became interested in the field of physical therapy while caring for athletes as a student athletic trainer.

Heather went on to achieve a Master’s of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia.
