Iyabo O Muse, MD

Iyabo Muse, MD, is chief of the Regional Anesthesia Division at UVA Health. For almost a decade, she has specialized in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. She is experienced in:

• Ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks
• Neuraxial anesthesia
• Point of care ultrasound (POCUS)

Designated a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Dr. Muse says she is excited about the discoveries being made in the field of pain management. But the key to providing individualized and quality care, she believes, is being a good listener and educating her patients.

“I value providing detailed information for patients so that they can make a well-informed decision about their anesthesia care,” she says.

Dr. Muse spent her childhood in Nigeria and in Staten Island, New York. She attended New York University and received her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. It was during medical school that she developed an interest in anesthesia. This led her to pursue residency training at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, followed by a fellowship in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

A physician and scientist, her research interests include:

• Perioperative pain management using regional anesthesia and multimodal pain strategies
• Improving healthcare disparities using quality improvement processes
• Environmental sustainability projects for the operating room

In her free time, Dr. Muse enjoys traveling, playing tennis and watching sports, especially tennis, NFL, college basketball, and the NBA.
