James R Stone, MD, PhD

James Stone, MD, PhD, performs a wide range of minimally invasive image-guided procedures to treat a variety of conditions. These conditions include endovascular management of peripheral vascular disease, mesenteric ischemia, and endograft placement for aortic vascular disease. He also cares for patients requiring liver-based interventions.

Dr. Stone uses IVC filter retrievals as well as management of acute or chronic venous occlusive disease. He also treats urologic and biliary drain placements and percutaneous ablation of hepatic, renal, or lung malignancies.

Dr. Stone is a principal investigator on multiple clinical trials and directs a national imaging core laboratory. He oversees translational research exploring questions related to massive pelvic hemorrhage, computational analysis of digital subtraction angiography imaging, and dosing considerations related to radioembolization for hepatic malignancy.

In addition to his clinical and research efforts, he also collaborates closely with the Department of Defense to explore questions related to military-relevant traumatic brain injury (TBI). Ongoing work includes the investigation of molecular imaging probes to detect the acute and chronic effects of TBI and explore the cerebrovascular response to overpressure associated with an explosive blast.

Continuing his work and research, Dr. Stone is also involved with work exploring the chronic neurological changes in operational personnel routinely exposed to repeated low-intensity blast exposure over a career. This work's goals include the nature of chronic neurological changes in these populations and helping to establish safe stand-off limits for low-level blast exposure.

Dr. Stone serves on multiple national advisory panels related to TBI. Additionally, he was recently appointed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to serve on a panel exploring loading exposure guidelines for preventing chronic neurological changes in blast-exposed personnel.
