Bio & Overview

Dr. Jeffrey M. Sturek, M.D., Ph.D. grew up in Columbia, Missouri and attended undergraduate school at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He moved to Charlottesville to pursue his M.D. and PhD degrees through the Medical Scientist Training (MD-PhD) Program at the University of Virginia, finishing this program in 2012. He then went on to complete a residency in Internal Medicine at UVA, serving an additional year as Chief Resident. He followed this up with a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at UVA.

At the conclusion of his fellowship in 2019, Dr. Sturek stayed on at UVA as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. His outpatient clinical focus is in the field of Oncopulmonology, caring for patients with pulmonary complications from the treatment of malignancy, including chemotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, radiation therapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant. In the inpatient realm, he attends in the medical ICU, helping care for critically ill patients with a wide array of diseases.

Dr. Sturek’s research interests are in the biology of lung inflammation and fibrosis. His research program aims to perform translational studies which bridge the gap between basic science and clinical medicine to better inform our understanding of inflammatory lung diseases and how to treat them.

Outside of work, Dr. Sturek enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. As a former athlete, he aspires to stay active, either through playing sports with his children, running, or working in the yard.
