Bio & Overview
Jenniffer Herrera, MD is a board-certified developmental-behavioral pediatrician. She works with families and caregivers of children with developmental differences.
Herrera's clinical interests include autism spectrum disorders and how they are similar to and differ from other developmental disabilities. Her goal is to collaborate with families to identify and improve challenging behaviors in children, either by offering behavioral or therapeutic suggestions for the home and school or through medication management. She works to share decision-making with families and help children live to their full potential.
As an assistant professor of pediatrics, Herrera also helps train medical students and pediatric residents in the assessment of typical versus atypical child development and hopes to impart some of her enthusiasm for developmental-behavioral pediatrics on trainees.
Herrera completed medical school at the Universidad Latina de Panama's Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud Dr. William C. Gorgas in her native country of Panama in 2008. She is fluent in Spanish, and enjoys providing care for the Spanish-speaking community.
Herrera moved to the U.S. to pursue specialty training in 2010. She completed residency in pediatrics at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. She then pursued a fellowship in developmental-behavioral pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York. During her time in Rochester, she was also a fellow in the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities program through the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.
In addition to clinical work and working with undergraduate- and graduate-level medical trainees, Dr. Herrera serves as the faculty member for the discipline of Medicine for Blue Ridge Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (an interdisciplinary leadership fellowship for trainees across health-related disciplines), as the clinical lead for Virginia's ECHO Autism STAT (a virtual network training primary care pediatric champions in early identification, diagnosis, and management of autism spectrum disorders), and as a developmental-behavioral pediatric consultant for Virginia Mental Health Access Program's Early Childhood (0-5) Consult Line for primary care pediatric providers.
