Bio & Overview
Juliana Bueno, MD, graduated from medical school in 2004 from Universidad de La Sabana and received her specialty degree in radiology from Fundacion Valle del Lili - Universidad CES in her home country of Colombia in 2011. After a clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic imaging at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, Bueno joined the Body Imaging Division of the radiology department at the University of Virginia.
Bueno has focused her career around education, curriculum development, and service. She was instrumental in the creation and development of the Global Health Leadership track in Radiology, which was established in 2014 with activities in Mbarara, Uganda, and has opened innumerable opportunities for UVA radiology residents and trainees in our partner institution.
Bueno has served as Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency and Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Radiology since 2020 and under her leadership, the program has established additional educational tracks, including the Dual Certification pathway in Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology.
From 2017 to 2024, she served as the inaugural director of the department’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program, supported by the Francesca and de Lange Fund. Bueno established the mission of the program around the three major pillars of education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities, focusing on a pipeline vision for the activities. Through her advocacy and with the support of Dr. Alan Matsumoto, chair of the department at the time, the initial idea grew and transformed, and provided support and advocacy across different levels of medical training. These include our Near-Peer Women’s Mentorship program, based on the concept of residents acting as mentors to medical students; the incorporation of a designated curriculum on health care disparities into the radiology residency curriculum; and the creation of a 4th-Year Medical Student Scholarship Program that supports visiting non-UVA medical students during 4-week rotation.
Bueno is actively involved in educational activities in national societies in Radiology and Thoracic imaging, and is an active speaker and educator in national and international meetings.
