Bio & Overview
Karen Ventura is a genetic counselor in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at UVA. She sees patients in the Fetal Care Center at UVA and through a telemedicine clinic with UVA Obstetrics and Gynecology Culpeper. She maintains licensure in Virginia and Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Born and raised in southwest Pennsylvania, Ms. Ventura earned her undergraduate degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She started her career as a cytogenetic technologist at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh and received a master’s in genetic counseling from the University of Pittsburgh in 1994.
After graduate school, she worked as a prenatal genetic counselor at Magee-Womens until 2004, when she joined UVA. She has been involved in the Virginia Association of Genetic Counselors since its inception and has served as secretary/treasurer and as a member of the board of directors. Her clinical interests include: prenatal and pre-conception genetic screening, testing and counseling, and supporting families through their family planning and reproductive journey.
Ms. Ventura is married and has two adult children. She enjoys spending time with her family, attending musicals and theatre and ballet productions, and travel.
