Bio & Overview

Katherine Fedder, MD, is a fellowship-trained head and neck oncologic and microvascular surgeon at UVA, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous diseases of the head and neck. This includes tumors of the skin and upper aerodigestive tract and diseases of the salivary glands.

Fedder has particular expertise in complex microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck, which is often required after removal of large tumors in order to minimize the impact surgery may have on function and appearance. She is trained in trans-oral robotic surgery, utilizing the da Vinci system. In addition, Fedder uses sialoendoscopy for minimally invasive approaches to the salivary glands, which allows for management of all aspects of cancerous and non-cancerous salivary conditions.

As an oncologic surgeon at UVA, Fedder collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of neuroradiologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, palliative care physicians, nutritionists and speech language pathologists. Each are vital in making sure patients receive the highest level of treatment and care.

Fedder grew up in Texas, but traveled east to attend Duke University as an undergraduate. She returned to Texas to pursue medical school at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Fedder then completed a residency in otolaryngology at Emory University followed by a fellowship in head and neck oncology and microvascular surgery at the University of Miami. Here, she trained under nine fellowship-trained head and neck surgeons. After completion of her fellowship, Fedder joined the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2015.

In addition to her clinical duties, Fedder is involved in the education of UVA resident physicians and medical students. She serves as clerkship director for third- and fourth-year medical students, and has collaborated with the School of Medicine to develop an advanced head and neck anatomy elective for fourth-year medical students pursuing relevant surgical specialties.

Fedder is currently pursuing a Master of Education through the University of Michigan. Her research interests are varied and reflect her passion for the clinical care of cancer patients, as well as her interest in the education of physicians.

On a national level, Fedder is an active member of the Association of Surgical Education, as well as the American Head and Neck Society, the Society of University Otolaryngologists, the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons. She serves on the Women in Otolaryngology Leadership and Mentorship Committee through the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

In her free time, Fedder enjoys spending time with her husband, son and her energetic dog, Roger.

The follow-up was cursory at best. I had reviewed the post-operative notes via the portal and they were consistent with the post-op telephone follow-up. Probably could skip this step in the future.
