Kristin Atkins, MD, is a maternal fetal medicine specialist serves as Medical Director of Inpatient Obstetrics. In this role, she works collaboratively with the nursing leadership of the inpatient obstetrics teams to create an environment that provides safe, quality care to the people who choose UVA Hospital for their pregnancy care.
Dr. Atkins comes to UVA Health from Howard University, where she served as residence program director, and prior to that she served as medical director of Labor and Delivery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She is committed to continuing her work in patient safety and education. Born in Maryland, Dr. Atkins spent most of her youth in Virginia Beach. After graduating from Davidson College, she worked for Operation Smile for a year before attending Eastern Virginia Medical School for her medical degree. She completed her residency in OB-GYN at Eastern Virginia Medical School and went on to complete a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis.
As a provider, Dr. Atkins provides comprehensive care to people with high-risk pregnancy, as well as providing prenatal fetal diagnosis. Since pregnancy is a time when the mother’s health impacts more than one person, Dr. Atkins works to educate her patients on how to have a healthy pregnancy so that together they can optimize outcomes for all. In her personal time, Atkins enjoys traveling, spending time at the beach, and reading.

Meet Kristin Atkins, MD
I am Kristin Atkins. I'm a maternal fetal medicine specialist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology here at UVA Health. The most exciting thing about what I do is that every day is different. So, one day I may be on labor and delivery. The next day I may be in the office caring for patients, and the next day doing ultrasound. I believe that it's our responsibility to help the patients to understand what is going on with them while they're pregnant, and so communication is key to having successful outcomes in everything that we do. From a clinical perspective, I'm most passionate about providing quality care to the patients that I take care of, regardless of where they come from. And I think it's really important to treat everybody with the same respect that they deserve.
