Bio & Overview

Laura Famularo, MS, LCGC, is a genetic counselor who sees pediatric and adult patients in the hospital and clinic. She educates patients and families about their genetic testing options and genetic conditions.

When someone chooses genetic testing, Laura assesses their risks and helps people make healthcare decisions based on those risks.

Her clinical interests include hemophilia and hematologic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, hearing loss, and mitochondrial disorders. She is also part of the care team at the UVA Health Hemophilia Clinic.

Laura starts appointments by understanding people’s goals for the visit. “I know how important an empathetic and supportive presence can be when receiving bad or uncertain news,” she says.

“I ensure they know that genetic testing is always optional, and they fully understand all of their options. I want my patients to know I am here to support them.”

Laura grew up in Virginia Beach. She attended Virginia Tech, where she received her undergraduate degree in human nutrition, foods, and exercise with a minor in psychology. She earned a master’s degree in genetic counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University and is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

In her spare time, Laura enjoys reading, backpacking, traveling, trying new things, and spending time outdoors, especially at the beach or the mountains.
