Lori A. Urban, PsyD, is a board-certified clinical health psychologist who specializes in pain management, working with medical and physical therapy staff to provide evidence-based psychological and behavioral interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness approaches. At UVA, she provides outpatient individual and family-focused evaluations and therapy at the Pain Management Center.
Her clinical interests, include: chronic pain in children, adolescents, and adults, physical manifestation of emotional distress, psychological/behavioral interventions for pain management, psychological sequelae of illness and pain.
Dr. Urban grew up in rural Indiana, and obtained her doctorate degree in clinical psychology at the University of Indianapolis. She completed an internship in health psychology and neuropsychology at Ball Memorial Hospital, and practiced in Indiana, Florida and South Carolina before arriving at UVA. Dr. Urban enjoys working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures with chronic medical conditions, and finds it rewarding to provide emotional support and pain relief strategies to patients during very stressful and vulnerable times.
