Luke Poveromo, MD, is a fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He specializes in oncologic reconstruction, or cancer-related reconstruction. He uses advanced microsurgery techniques for head and neck, breast, and lymphatic procedures.
He also supports patients with general plastic surgery needs, including cosmetic surgery and other kinds of reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Poveromo is from upstate New York. He earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University. After working in a hematology-oncology translational research lab for 2 years, he earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. During medical school, he developed a passion for reconstructive surgery.
He completed his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the affiliate hospital of Cornell and Columbia Universities. During residency, he served as chief resident for 2 years and received many honors, including the Dicran Goulian Award for Academic Excellence in Plastic Surgery. After residency, he completed a microsurgery fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He focused on cutting-edge techniques in head and neck, breast, and lymphatic cancer reconstruction.
Dr. Poveromo is actively involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of plastic surgeons. He is the medical student clerkship director and the associate program director for the residency program at UVA Health. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial, and Oral Health at the University of Virginia. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications and has presented at many regional and national meetings.
His approach to patient care is based on shared decision-making. He makes sure patients fully understand the treatment options available to them and collaborates to pick the right personalized approach.
