Mary V Bowers, CNM, PMHNP

Mary "Ginny" Bowers, PMHNP, CNM, IBCLC is a triple board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, nurse-midwife and lactation consultant.

Her clinical interests include reproductive psychiatry, breastfeeding medicine, and female health throughout the lifespan.

"I had a complicated labor and delivery with my first child," Ginny says. "As a result, I received intensive care for several days after giving birth. That experience inspired me to obtain an advanced practice degree as a board certified nurse-midwife. To continue to better address patient needs, I later went on to further my education and became board certified as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and lactation consultant. I'm passionate about providing empowering, evidence-based, and inclusive patient-centered care."

Ginny was born in Norfolk and raised in Richmond, Virginia. She earned a bachelor of science in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University, a master of science in nursing (concentration nurse-midwifery) from Frontier Nursing University, and a doctorate of nursing practice as well as a post-masters certificate (concentration psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner) from Wilmington University.

Ginny began her healthcare career as a patient care technician while pursuing her undergraduate degree. She went on to serve as a registered nurse in several different settings. Before joining UVA Health in 2022, she served as a director of midwifery, certified nurse-midwife, and lactation consultant. She is also trained as a CenteringPregnancy Lead Facilitator.
