Mirnela Byku, MD, PhD, is a cardiologist who specializes in treating patients with heart failure. Her specialties include advanced heart failure therapies such as mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation.

Dr. Byku earned her medical degree and a doctorate in pharmacological and physiological science from St. Louis University in Missouri. She completed her internal medicine internship and residency at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She then completed a cardiovascular disease fellowship and a postgraduate fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Washington University in St. Louis.

“I take a holistic approach to patient care, focusing on understanding their overall goals, in order to help achieve not only longevity, but their desired quality of life,” she says. “We now have multiple therapies to offer people with heart failure, from medications and minimally invasive implantable devices to LVAD and heart transplantation.”
