Bio & Overview
Nabil Elkassabany, MD, MSCE, MBA is the vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Anesthesiology. He specializes in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine.
His research focuses on outcomes after orthopedic surgery for patients who receive regional anesthesia. He is also interested in improving outcomes after major joint arthroplasty.
Elkassabany earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Alexandria University in Egypt. He completed his anesthesia residency at the Cleveland Clinic and his regional anesthesia subspeciality training at the University of Florida. He also earned a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Temple University.
Before joining UVA, he was an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care and the director of regional and orthopedic anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He was also the director of the anesthesia service at the ambulatory surgery facility at Penn Medicine at University City.
