Bio & Overview
Patrick O. McGarey Jr., MD, is an otolaryngologist at the UVA Center for Voice and Swallowing. He specializes in the medical and surgical care of patients with voice, airway, and swallowing problems, diagnosing and treating these conditions using a wide variety of in-clinic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. He also performs surgery using conventional and technologically advanced (laser) techniques.
At the Center for Voice and Swallowing, patients are cared for by an interdisciplinary team of physicians and speech language pathologists. Patients range from singers and professional speakers with a variety of voice problems to those with laryngeal cancer. The team also treats patients who develop scar tissue in their airway (laryngotracheal stenosis) and patients with globus sensation, throat clearing, and other swallowing-related problems.
Dr. McGarey is interested in clinically impactful research that affects patient care. He’s working to create multi-institutional research partnerships to study the relatively rare laryngeal disease he treats.
Born in Washington DC, Dr. McGarey grew up in a nearby suburb of McLean, Virginia. He attended the College of William and Mary, where he studied biology and economics. He pursued his medical degree and completed post-graduate residency training at the University of Virginia. Dr. McGarey then completed a fellowship in laryngology and voice disorders at the University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas, prior to returning to UVA as an attending physician.
In his free time, Dr. McGarey enjoys traveling with his wife and daughters, fly fishing, and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Highlights
Meet Otolaryngologist Patrick McGarey, MD
My name is Patrick McGarey. I'm an otolaryngologist at UVA. I focus on voice, airway andswallowing disorders. Our clinic is special in that we see almost all of our patients with a speech pathologist, and that really allows us to take care of the whole patient. And whether they need therapy services, or need medical or surgical intervention, we can provide that. From a pretty young age, I really started to develop a love for science and for problem solving. When I first sort of realized that I could apply those skills towards directly helping people through practicing medicine, it really became a perfect fit for me. When a patient comes to see us at the voice and swallowing center, they're going to get a really detailed history. We really want to understand what they're going through, even if they've already seen another ENT specialist. And then oftentimes we'll perform some type of diagnostic procedure the same day in clinic that really helps us rule out a lot of potential causes and potentially diagnose the problem outright on that first visit. I'm most passionate about really listening to the patient, getting to know them, getting to know who they are. And then using that information to help really craft the best treatment plan for them. If you listen to the patient and really understand where they're coming from and what their symptoms are, I really think you can take care of them in the best way possible.
