Bio & Overview
Paul Gallo, MD, is a triple board-certified anesthesiologist with dual training in adult cardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care medicine.
He cares for patients having cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and major vascular surgery. He also provides intensive care for patients recovering from these surgeries in the thoracic/cardiovascular post-operative unit (TCV-PO).
Dr. Gallo is committed to providing excellent care and thorough education to patients and their families. His research involves using opioid-reducing techniques to improve pain management and optimize recovery after heart surgery.
Dr. Gallo is the director of medical student education in the TCV-PO and is the cardiothoracic anesthesia rotation director for anesthesia residents. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University.
He completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Wisconsin and completed two fellowships at Columbia University in critical care medicine and cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Dr. Gallo also has a nursing degree from Marquette University in Wisconsin and continues to use his nursing skills as a physician to provide holistic and individualized care for patients and families.
“When my son needed surgery, we entrusted UVA to take care of him,” says Dr. Gallo. “I will never forget the emotions I experienced before, during, and after his surgery and recognize that patients and families I interact with are likely experiencing some of those very same emotions.”
Dr. Gallo grew up on his parents’ horse farm, where he learned how to ride horses, build fences, and drive a tractor. The long hours and daily chores of farm life prepared him for the demands of being a physician.
