Bio & Overview
Paul Viscuse, MD, is an oncologist who provides subspecialized care for patients with genitourinary malignancies, including prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, testicular cancer, and penile cancer.
“I approach patients with the understanding that each encounter is unique in terms of the disease and clinical course, as well as the values and goals of each patient,” he says. “I address this by taking the time to get to know each patient beyond the disease that brought them to the clinic, and then managing their cancer to the best of my abilities, while maintaining a continued level of trust and communication.”
Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Dr. Viscuse completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, followed by a Master of Science degree from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. He worked as an EMT in Long Island for 2 years prior to receiving his medical degree from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.
During his residency training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Dr. Viscuse’s initial interest in the field of oncology was reinforced after his mom and cousin were diagnosed with cancer. He went on to pursue a fellowship in hematology and oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. During his final year of fellowship, he was selected to join the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center team as a genitourinary oncologist.
Dr. Viscuse is an active researcher. At UVA, he will pursue his interest in conducting therapeutic clinical trials focused on improving treatments for prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies.
Outside of work, Dr. Viscuse is an avid sports fan. He also enjoys weightlifting, golfing, reading history, and spending time with his wife, Brittany, and their dogs.

Highlights
Meet GU Oncologist Paul Viscuse, MD
My name is Paul Viscuse, and I'm a medical oncologist at the University of Virginia. I see patients who have cancers involving the genitourinary system. This includes the prostate, the kidney, the bladder. And treatments may include chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, or other newer agents that are under investigation. Oncology specifically interested me because I think it's the best crossroads of fascinating science, but also incorporates the human nature of interacting with a patient through very difficult circumstances, and I thought that was the perfect blend for me. When I was getting my master's degree, I did my thesis in kidney cancer management. And shortly thereafter, my cousin, who I was very close to, was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer and went through many of the treatments that I discussed in my thesis. And it felt like fate was pulling me in the direction of oncology as a result. The greatest satisfaction I get in meeting patients is addressing their anxiety and fears when they first walk through the door. It's a long road for many folks, and it's some of the scariest times in their life. And I get the best joy when I can help them through that process. The reason people should come to UVA for their cancer care is UVA is uniquely positioned as comprehensive cancer center with a large catchment area that involves people living in urban settings, suburban settings, and rural settings, all of which need unique subspecialized cancer care, and they have that access here at UVA.
