Ronnie Shammas, MD, is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon whose specialties include:

• Breast reconstruction
• Lymphedema surgery
• Microsurgical reconstruction
• Complex reconstruction following cancer

“I approach each patient relationship as a partnership. Reconstructive surgery often involves several reasonable options, and the best choice depends on what matters most to each patient,” he says. “Together, we develop an individualized treatment plan, and I remain closely involved throughout their care and recovery.”

Dr. Shammas grew up in close-knit Lebanese family in a small town in eastern North Carolina. He was inspired to pursue medicine by his father, who was also a physician.

Dr. Shammas received his medical degree from Duke University, where he also completed an integrated plastic surgery residency. He completed a reconstructive microsurgery fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and has a master of public health from Harvard.

“Many patients meet me during one of the most difficult periods of their lives, and I recognize that reconstruction is about far more than completing an operation,” he says. “Reconstruction can affect comfort, confidence, identity, and quality of life for years. I will always be honest about what surgery can and cannot achieve and remain invested in helping each patient reach the outcome that is right for them.”
