Samina Afreen, MD, is an endocrinologist who specializes in caring for patients with diabetes, obesity, and calcium and bone disorders. She also treats metabolic bone disorders, adrenal disorders, thyroid disorders, and lipid disorders.
Diabetes technology and calcium and bone disorders are her main research interests.
"I try to make my patients' lives as easy as possible while treating their medical conditions,” Dr. Afreen shares. “My goal is to help them make healthy choices that, at the same time, are not personally burdensome."
She adds, "I had diabetes during both of my pregnancies. So I know what it feels like to be checking blood sugars several times a day, restricting diet, and taking insulin."
Dr. Afreen grew up in India and attended medical school at Calcutta Medical College. After moving to the United States, she completed her internal medicine residency at Howard University Hospital and her endocrine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Before joining UVA Health in 2022, she worked at the Center for Diabetes and Endocrine Health in Erie, Pennsylvania.
In her free time, Dr. Afreen enjoys spending time with her family as well as painting landscapes and making plastic flower sculptures.
